6. Discussion and Background
The Fire Department utilizes Turnout Maintenance Company as its preferred vendor for the certification, maintenance, and repairs of the department's turnout safety gear. The newly mandated annual certification process for turnout safety gear has revealed numerous needed repairs, which have consequently increased maintenance and repair costs. To address these needs, the current request aims to increase the blanket purchase order by $10,000 to fulfill the remaining required annual inspections and maintenance for turnout safety gear. The department is firmly committed to maintaining equipment that is strong, functional, and compliant, as this specialized gear is crucial for safeguarding personnel during emergency response operations.
The requested increase will enable the completion of mandated annual inspections and cleaning for 230 sets of turnout safety gear, in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1851 standards. Compliance with these standards is crucial for the safety of our personnel and the department’s operational effectiveness.
A timeline for replacing turnout safety gear has been established to align with expiration dates, ensuring that all personnel have access to necessary protective gear without interruption. This increase in the purchase order will strengthen our commitment to maintaining a safe and prepared workforce, reflecting our dedication to upholding the highest safety standards in the field.
