6. DISCUSSION AND BACKGROUND
City staff received multiple requests for the installation of red curb along the frontage of 2190 N. Canal Street, specifically at the driveway for Explore Prime Academy, to enhance visibility when exiting the school driveway. The school is located on the northwest corner of N. Canal Street and E. Meats Avenue. The driveway for this school is on the west side of Canal Street, about 240' north of the intersection.
N. Canal Street, spanning from E. Meats Avenue to E. Heim Avenue, is a two-lane roadway measuring 44' in width, with parking permitted on both sides of the street. The land use along this stretch of Canal Street is a mix of single-family homes, retail space, schools, and private recreational facilities. Canal Street, along Meats Avenue and Cumberland Road, features a noticeable curvature that influences the alignment of the street and the visibility coming out of the driveway when vehicles are parked along the street.
A field review conducted by City staff determined that there is 185' of curbside parking available north of the subject driveway, accommodating approximately eight vehicles.
