6. DISCUSSION AND BACKGROUND
The City of Orange has celebrated Arbor Day for more than 30 years and has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for 36 consecutive years. To maintain this designation, the city must conduct an annual observance of Arbor Day.
Arbor Day provides an opportunity for community-wide appreciation of trees. City-sponsored Arbor Day events engage the community in learning and neighborhood beautification through tree planting. These events foster a connection with nature and encourage a lasting sense of responsibility for the City's green infrastructure. Direct participation in Arbor Day strengthens community ties and instills a sense of ownership and care for trees, which may be especially important for younger volunteers who may not yet have developed an appreciation for trees.
The upcoming observance of Arbor Day and the community planting event will occur on Saturday, July 26, 2025. Volunteers will plant seven 15-gallon Island Oak trees and seven 15-gallon Brisbane Box trees in the Right-of-Way at 1300 E Almond, on the north side of Palmyra Elementary School.
