6. DISCUSSION AND BACKGROUND
Staff received a request for red curb on both sides of the northern driveway serving Esplanade Elementary School, to enhance visibility when exiting the school driveway. The school is located near the intersection of Esplanade Street and Spring Street. The northern driveway for the school, currently designated outbound only, is on the east side of Esplanade Street, approximately 600 feet north of the intersection.
Esplanade Street, spanning from Spring Street to Walnut Avenue, is a two-lane roadway measuring 38 feet in width, with parking permitted on both sides of the street. The land use along this stretch of Esplanade Street is generally comprised of single-family residences and schools.
A field review conducted by City Staff determined that there is approximately 30 feet of curbside parking available north of the subject driveway, accommodating one parking space. Staff recommends installing 30 feet of red curb north of the driveway. South of the driveway, there is approximately 85 feet of curbside parking available, accommodating four parking spaces.
