6. Discussion and Background
The request is from the resident at 1609 W. Almond Avenue to implement red curb on both sides of his driveway to provide easier access to the property. According to the proponent, motorists have been parking up to the subject driveway which is only 20 feet wide making ingress and egress to the subject driveway difficult.
The land use in the area is a mix of single-family homes and apartment complexes, and as a result, the demand for on-street parking can be high, especially in the evening. A field review performed by City staff indicates that there is 53 feet of curbside parking west of the subject driveway, enough space for two vehicles to park. There is 75 feet on the east side, with parking for three vehicles. Painting five feet of red curb on both sides of the subject driveway will provide better access to the proponent’s property and improve sight distance with no net loss of on-street parking.
Staff finds that the request has merit and recommends that the Traffic Commission approves the installation of five feet of red curb on both sides of the driveway serving 1609 W. Almond Avenue.
